According to the author, the 1909 strike reflected tensions between Hawaii's Japanese and white communities. It is suggested that the responses of planters and local authorities to the strike established precedents for the suppression of later strikes and for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Particular focus is given to the role of the media in the strike.
